Haute Couture 2014: Chanel

White and blue walls surround the white runway, fireplaces burning with a digital flame at each end of the catwalk, and huge baroque mirrors hanging above complete with the gold double C insignia. The third day of Fashion Week in Paris kicked off with the one and only, Chanel.

Designer Karl Lagerfeld received inspiration from an old Le Corbusier Paris apartment. The runway itself seemed to evoke this inspiration but, the collection that appeared brought complete emphasis to this modernized, minimalist, stunning concept.

The Fall 2014 Chanel looks included a shockingly casual but sophisticated use of tweed. The jackets and blazers were paired over shorts that just jutted out from underneath. These included various patters and shapes, with the use of sharp shoulders to high collars.

A very interesting aspect of this collection were the seams — or lack there of. Every piece was seamless, with the fabric actually molded together.

Every outfit was unique, but all were paired with simple flat sandals, tied in bows around the ankles. The hair was also uniform throughout. Sam McKnight created a cropped, messy, wind-blown look, with just a little bit of control on the sides. The small hats worn on the back of the models’ heads were designed by Maison Michel to match each individual outfit.

Purses were also used as a key accessory to many of the looks, as 80’s-style messenger bags were delicately detailed and slung across multiple outfits.

Following the pattern of the egg-shaped, gold and silver embroidered, white gowns, a wedding dress appeared for the finale. The final model on the runway was radiant, but not only because of her dress. Final model, Ashleigh Good, glowed, almost seven-months pregnant, and holding the hand of her designer, Karl Lagerfeld as they completed the show together.
