Day 5 of Paris Fashion Week was quite bittersweet as it marked Jean Paul Gaultier’s last ready-to-wear show. The show celebrated an incredibly happy ending to what started over 30 years ago. Gaultier, who dominated fashion in the mid 80s and 90s, kept his signature looks consistent in the show. Mariner stripe shirts, tailored silhouettes, conical breasts on corset dresses and lucha libre fighting designs gave praise to the classics Gaultier gave fashion. Gaultier went out with boom with his show, staged as a Miss Universe pageant. Models sang and danced to Prince as Rossy de Palma and Alex Taylor narrated.
Acne Studios creative director, Johnny Johansson’s fascination with today’s youth and the connection to luxury was his inspiration for his Spring 2015 show. For his designs, Johansson created a means of providing luxury to the younger generation for work and play. Styles were mixed to create trendy and fresh looks that speak to the jet-setting, ‘cool-kid’ attitude. An elongated waistcoat held together by one button, covering a bare chest matched with a manly briefcase should give you an idea. There was a definite sexy 70’s vibe, featuring oversized aviators, v-neck dresses and vests and ‘snobby’ neck scarves. Materials were see through, prints were controversial and no bras were allowed.
Haider Ackermann’s soft and pretty Spring 15′ line touched all of our feminine sides, bringing out the lady in all of us. Tones of blush pink and mauve with hints of moss green made up the earthy designs. There was a tranquil appeal to the collection too. An unstructured trapeze jacket, matched with wide pants, a heavy emphasis on silk, and chiffon ruffles resembling flowers made up the whimsical designs. In regards to his design process, Ackermann explains, “All these nude colors are a sweet gesture for me…I might be going through a tender phase!”
Possibly the most creative of the Spring Paris shows was Comme Des Garcons’s all-red collection, as far off as possible from clothing as we know it. The 22 unique looks included a coat covered in sewn on layering sleeves, a pleather and chiffon ensemble worn with a hood, and a top hat with a 3-D snake pattern curving around the body.
We can only assume that this was the designers way of shedding light on the fact that fashion today is focused on promoting trend after trend in order to increase sales. Creativity is diminishing as compared to how it used to be. Models walked the runway in robotic movements, further strengthening the shows idea of fashion as a machine-like industry.
