International fashion icon, Oscar de la Renta, passed away at age 82. Family members confirmed his death to ABC News tonight. De la Renta has been battling cancer since 2006, but the official cause of his death has not yet been confirmed.

Just last week, De la Renta appointed Peter Copping as the Creative Director of his brand. Now the fabulous designs and name of De la Renta rest in his hands.

Oscar de la Renta had humble beginnings in the Dominican Republic with six sisters. Soon, Oscar de la Renta’s designs earned him a name all over the country. His most memorable piece was only worn about a month ago, when he designed the wedding dress for Amal Clooney.

However, he was famous long before then, all the way back into the 60’s when he helped design for First Lady, Jacqueline Kennedy. From there he designed for Oprah Winfrey, Lea Michele, Jennifer Garner, and Sarah Jessica Parker, just to name a few. His designs even stretched beyond the red carpet and into the political scene. In addition to Mrs. Kennedy, he dressed Nancy Reagan, and recently, Michelle Obama.

In 2013, De la Renta was quoted, “The only realities in life are that you are born, and that you die.” which is a heart-breaking reality at the moment. However, he went on to say, “You have to appreciate every single day that you’re alive… I’m having a fantastic time.”

While we mourn the loss of this legendary fashion icon, we hold onto his creativity, inspiration, and passion. The fashion world has nothing but respect for his memory and all that he has accomplished, and it will not be the same without him.
