Haute Couture 2014: Armani Prive

The venue set the tone for the whole show. A sleek black runway and a black lacquer box opened the show, revealing the theme of the collection: red. The collection stuck strictly to reds, blacks, and whites to make quite the statement. Behind the runway was a soft screen projection of a women wearing red, dancing.

The show opens with classic and clean-cut daywear. Flowing, neatly tailored jackets paired with short or pencil skirts were simple, but undoubably timeless peices. The short gloves, heels, and matching handbags worn added a classy combination of everyday wear and runway attire.

The daywear transforms into evening wear as the show continues. With this, patterns, dots, textures, headpieces, tulle, and veils appear. This section included short evening dresses paired with huge fur coats, cropped peplum capes, thickly patterned jackets, or netted headdresses with polka dots.

The floor-length gowns kept of the tri-color tradition, with both heavily tulle ruffles pieces and slim-fitting gowns. The dresses were paired with one of the signature pieces of the night: a veil. The veils were anywhere from cropped short to full floor-length. Often embelished with the continuing polka dot theme, these veils blurred the silouette of the gowns and added another dimension to each dress.

Giorgio Armani has always had a preference for the culture and vibes of Asain style. The Armani Prive collection draws on this inspiration for the oragami-like shapes and bell-shaped kimono sleeves of the jackets. Even this classic color scheme of lacquer reds, whites, and blacks gives off somewhat of an asain accent.
