Backpacks That Give Back: Eastpak Artist Studio Project

In the last year, Eastpak has commissioned the fashion industry’s most talented and creative designers, like Manolo Blahnik and Massimo Giorgetti to reinvent the iconic ” Padded Pak’r” backpack. The limited edition collection will be available in an auction here beginning on World Aids Day (December 1) to raise funds to battle AIDS, and will be available till December 21st . All the  proceeds will be donated to the charity organization, Designers Against Aids, which aims to inform young people that safe sex is important and that they need to be aware of their HIV status. Below are the designers for part one of the project. Manolo Blahnik Shoe designer extraordinaire,  Manolo Blahnik, took part in the initiative with a Spanish inspired piece. The white backpack is detailed with red pompon trimming and finished off with his signature. Blahnik shares, “I really hope people will be inspired by my design. I feel very honored to be a part of this project and to help support such a worthy cause.”

The bag has a ton of personality and will be sure to make any outfit! WalterVanBeirendonck_07WalterVanBeirendonck_06 Tim Coppens

Belgian born and now New York based designer, Tim Coppens, found the perfect way to add to the athletic-like bag and make it a noble and luxurious charm. It’s capacious and full of pockets, that are very useful both for going hiking in style or just running errands in the city.

Justine de Moriame and Erika Schillebeeckx are the winners of the East x ArtsThread Wildcard Competition, which gave to the opportunity to the two Belgian designers to show their own artistic interpretation of the bag. Their design takes inspiration from their “spiritual tradition” that they try to explain as a mix of emotions, memories and beliefs. They joined the project because, as they shared, young people are not truly aware of risks of HIV because they think it belongs to the past, but the situation needs to change.

KRJST_01 KRJST_03 KRJST_05MSGM Italian designer Massimo Giorgetti, famous worldwide for his dynamic and young brand, MSGM, took inspiration from make-up for his limited edition piece. Designing an eye and lips wearing some smeared lipstick, Massimo continued the theme from his MSGM Fall/Winter collection. The piece he designed is one of the most intricate ones of the whole collection, and possibly the heaviest due, to all the rhinestone and beads it has on but we can’t help but love all the glitz and the glam of the bag! MSGM_03 MSGM_01 MSGM_04 It’s always great to give back and when you’re giving back and getting such glam pieces in the process, you can’t complain. These five backpacks will run out quickly so make sure that you are glued to your computer when the auction begins on December 1st here! The second round of backpacks will be released in the next few months including Jean Paul Gaultier and Lala Berlin so if you want to come back for more, there will be plenty to choose from! that have been release so far,but stay tuned, because more have to come!
