New York Fashion Week Spring 2015: Day 3

What better way to open up day 3 of New York Fashion Week than with the iconic designs of Lacoste? Designer Filipe Oliveira Baptista kept the show exciting and diverse. Some pieces had more conservative classic cuts, with long vests or button-ups with rolled-up sleeves. Other pieces were very modern, urban, youthful — and even sporty. Short skirts were paired with matching jersey style tops, displaying large football style numbers on the front, paired with a draping jacket from behind. Although patterns, styles, and cuts varied largely, most pieces were drop waist and belted creating a cohesive Lacoste look for Spring/Summer 2015.

Prabal Gurung kept the Spring/Summer 2015 collection interesting — to say the least. He exposed a little bit of skin here and there, and allowed each cut to hang a little differently on each model. The collection was largely asymmetrical, brought a wide array of colors to the runway, and included everything from mini-skirts, to sweater-pants combos, to to stunning gowns.

Coming from all the way from Sydney, Australia, Dion Lee looks back to his hometown for inspiration in many of his collections. This time he specifically draws from Aussie artist, Jeffrey Smart. Lee works towards a heaviness and darkness in his designs, this time hitting an almost biker streetster style. With moto leather jacket and metal chains dangling dangerous the pieces had a harsh look. Yet, the entire show was not just this. The show began with a show-stopping strapless number that oozed a simpler, more refined sex-appeal. And the collection even included some bright patterened pieces bringing sudden oranges and blues into the color palate.

In order to do a “serious” collection this season, Suzanne Ostwald decided to pull inspiration from her childhood in Berlin, Germany. With her partner, Ingvar Helgason, the collection had touches of romanticism and childhood as seen from the view of an artistic adult. Pieces in the collection resembled school-girl uniforms, while others mimicked a more militant look. The mood of the collected from Ostwald echoed clearly in every piece she put out on the runway.

Designer Lubov Azria drew inspiration from onnabugeisha, or Japanese women warriors for the Herve Leger collection. The style of pieces went beyond the tradition kimono look, to something more modern, edgy, and sexy. The goal was not only to keep it fierce and bold, but to keep it feminine and beautiful. Every outfit on the runway awed the audience and showed the confidence of the women behind the fabric.

Alaxander Wang Spring/Summer 2015 collection pulled it’s concepts from sportier styles. Even though, some of these outfits were designed to look like athletic sneakers themselves, the snug-fitting dresses were still sexy and unique. This collection brought him back to his original style with more femininity and sex-appeal than his last few collections have had — and we love it!

Christian Siriano had a stunning and diverse Spring/Summer 2015 collection. Siriano’s inspiration this season actually came from Sergio Redegalli, an Aussie artist known for his glass sculptures. In order to achieve such an interesting and diverse collection, Siriano used a variety of layers, embroidery, fabrics, and cuts. His inspiration for the textiles came from Brooklyn native, Tara Donovan. As a designer, Siriano is not afraid to push the boundaries. We watched is collection transform into grand evening wear, while maintaining it’s calm color palate of whites and icy blues, and were in awe of what he was able to do.

Mara Hoffman set a goal for her self and her style this season: to ease back a little. Hoffman is infamous for her bold prints and bright colors. However, for her spring/summer 2015 collection she was determined to stick to her motto: “Be light”. The runway was filled with silhouettes of loosely flowing summer dresses and cut-out fitted leotards. Although the show began with a plain white frock, the rest of the collection included bohemian patterns — ranging from simple geometric shapes to bold concentric rings to natural leafy prints.
